If you want to camp, Mary Lou and Gerry have a family size tent and two pup tents that they are happy to set up on their back lawn or loan. Mark and Roberta also have a family tent and some cots available to loan and space for up to 6 campers at the lake over the weekend. There is an 'outdoor' shower attached to the family camp, and a toilet and hot & cold water in the garage.

Camping in Freeport

Freeport is about 50 minutes from the MacLeod camp in Buxton and 20 minutes north of Portland.  It has plenty of diversions for easy hiking in the woods or by the ocean, bike trails, shopping, restaurants, mini golf and proximity to Portland. Gerry and Mary Lou live in Freeport and can be of help with info, forgotten items, and an extra bathroom, etc.

1.Winslow Park is a great campground on the ocean and is operated by the Town of Freeport. It is 5 minutes from the Kennedy’s and convenient to the highway and town amenities. Sites go fast and reservations start sometime in April.  In addition to the campground and bathrooms, there are hiking trails, a tidal beach and a large playground. Here are links to the campground and the campground map.  Best sites are 8-20, 58,59,60,68,70,72,74.

2.  Bradbury Mountain State Park in Freeport. Reservations are made on the Maine State Parks Website. Pull down “Bradbury Mountain” on the pull down menu. Bradbury has hiking and biking trails and a nice playground.

3. Wolfe’s Neck Park.  A little more out of the way, but a very nice campground on a 600 acre Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment organic which is on the ocean.

4. Maine Idyll Motor Court. One other location we’re suggesting are cabins that are a step up from camping but very reasonably priced and easy to access on route 1. The cabins have been owned by a Freeport family for generations. They are decent and clean.

Camping Closest to Buxton

We don’t know much about these campgrounds but they are the closest campgrounds to Buxton that have decent reviews. We're happy to check them out for you if interested.

1. Family and Friends Campground in Standish. About 15 minutes north of Buxton at the southern tip of Lake Sebago.  Amenities include a swimming pool!

2. Homestead by the River at 610 New County Rd Biddeford ME. About 25 minutes southeast of Buxton on the Saco River and 35 minutes south of Portland.

3. Sebago Lake State Park. Sebago Lake is a beautiful and very popular Maine Lake. The state campground is on the northern tip, about a 40 minute drive from Buxton and can be longer if traffic. About 55 minutes northwest of Portland. Contact info is the same as Bradbury.
